76cmX121cm Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was a Jesuit monk and painter born in Milan, Italy. In 1715 (the fifty-four year of the Kangxi Reign of the Qing Dynasty), he came to China as a missionary, and immediately became a court painter. After the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties, he was engaged in painting for more than 50 years in China, and participated in the design of the Western building of the Old Summer Palace. He was one of the ten court painters of the Qing Dynasty.
