641. Large collection of 400+ horror and sci-fi movie and TV tie-in books. Forrest J Ackerman was among the first collectors to recognize the value and importance of movie merchandising - not just the obvious posters and lobby cards - but in-store tie-ins like this near-complete library of vintage film and TV photoplay editions. Remarkably, the concept of "Read the movie, watch the book" promotions dates almost to the dawn of cinema, as this collection, obtained from Ackerman directly, and secondhand from Ackerman acolytes Ron Borst and Tony Tate, attests. Present are foreign editions of Fritz Lang's silent masterpieces Woman In the Moon and Metropolis, illustrated with mouthwatering stills from the films. Universal horror fans will be delighted to find a near complete run of every major monster movie photoplay, from Chaney's 1925 Phantom of the Opera to Lugosi's 1931 Dracula and Karloff's Frankenstein through 1933's The Invisible Man (UK and US editions) and 1954's Creature From the Black Lagoon, up to and including rare reissue editions like a 1947 paperback edition of Dracula coinciding with the film's first reissue. Other important monster titles include 1933's King Kong (several editions), Dr. Cyclops and 1939's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Most early photoplay editions are hardcover through the late 1940s, when cheaper paperbacks became available. Some of these are among the rarest tie-in books, particularly those touting Hammer Films. Present is a 1958 edition of Dracula promoting Hammer's masterpiece, Horror of Dracula, inscribed by Christopher Lee, plus several other Hammer horror photoplays. Hardcover photoplays enjoyed a resurgence with the release of Star Wars, which was published in both soft and (a very rare) hardcover, which led to several others including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET - The Extraterrestrial and Alien. All these volumes are present. The television photoplay books include most of the 1960s Golden Age classics, from Batman through The Invaders, from Lost In Space, Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea to V, culminating in a run of virtually every Star Trek photoplay from TOS through the spinoff movies. All told, this remarkable collection represents an opportunity to acquire a near-complete photoplay book library dating from the silent era through the present. $1,000 - $1,500
