Alice's Adventures Under Ground, First Edition, presentation copy inscribed by Lewis Carroll to the mother of Edith Blakemore, one of his child-friends. Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge (Lewis Carroll). Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Being a facsimile of the original MS. book afterwards developed into 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.' London: Richard Clay and Sons for Macmillan and Co., 1886. Octavo. First Edition. Original gilt-stamped red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Inscribed by Dodgson in violet ink on the half-title, "Mrs. Blakemore from the Author. Jan. 1887." Dodgson first met Mrs. Blakemore's daughter, Edith, while staying in Eastbourne on his annual holiday in July, 1877. He arranged regular meetings with her, engaging her mother to facilitate these. Unusual in his relations with young girls, Dodgson continued a friendly correspondence with Edith for nearly 20 years. Trace of mottling to cloth; otherwise, a Fine, fresh copy. Chemised in a ¼ red morocco slipcase.
