Description

Robert Block was the first director of the 'Athelia' studios, founded in 1928 and attached to the Paris department store, Aux Trois Quartiers. His furniture was marketed in London by Heals, and Waring and Gillow. He used lacquer, mirror glass and metal to create 18th-century pastiches as in the present lot, as well as furniture in the 'Moderne' taste. For an example of a dressing table in this latter style, see the permanent collection of the V&A, Acc. No. W.36:1 to 5-1987 . Condition Report The mirrored glass with visible foiling, chips and losses throughout. There are some larger losses and chips, most noticeably to the front where there are two large v-shaped losses, and another visibly cracked area. The brass cap to the front-right leg detached but present. Scratches to top. The left back board with large split down the middle.
