Item Details
Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 35-star American flag, possibly a Naval flag. Ca 1863-1865.

Approx. 62 x 100 in. hand-sewn wool flag with 35 double-appliquéd cotton stars configured in 7/7/7/7/7 pattern (toning, soiling, some areas of separation and small holes scattered throughout, some reinforced areas throughout). Hoist is cotton with approx. 2 in. loop on top, 1 1/2 in. loop on bottom, and 3 in. wood toggle attached to jute rope (significant wear and areas of loss to hoist). The 35-star flag represents the inclusion of West Virginia to the Union. It was in use 4 July 1863 through 3 July 1865.
The size and construction of this flag suggest that it may have been flown aboard a ship.

Provenance: Consignor relates that this flag was purchased as part of a grouping associated with Rear Admiral Oliver S. Glisson (1809-1890), who served as captain of the steamer USS Santiago de Cuba from 1864 through 1865. No further provenance provided.
