Pair of early books related to Waterloo including; 1.) Book titled ""Illustrations to the Battles of Quatre-Bras Ligny, and Waterloo in a series of thirty-four etchings drawn from the most correct information by Capt. George Jones and engraved by S. Mitan" sold by John Booth, London, 1817. Manuscript name of previous owner "Fr. Sempill" on title page and on reverse of every engraving. Blind stamp on several pages of "Westminster College Library, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania". Book measures 5.5" x 8.5" presents full leather binding with wear and interior presents missing flyleaf and some slight foxing. 2.) Book titled "The Journal of the three Days of the Battle of Waterloo, being my own personal journal of what I saw and of the events in which I bore a part, in the Battle of Waterloo and retreat to Paris" by an eyewitness, published by T. Chaplin, London, 1816. Book is octavo in size and presents half Moroccan binding. Book contains fold-out map and exhibits detachment of front board. Provenance: Gibbs family collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Members of the Gibbs family, most notably Alvin J Gibbs and James W. Gibbs were discerning and dedicated collectors of autographs, books, and other antiques. The Gibbs family founded the Gibbs Manufacturing Company of Canton, Ohio in 1829 that evolved over the years from farming implement manufacture to notions and toys.
