"You too, Arthur? My dear man:Anyone who loves me understands me and so would feel only contempt for Shear - not concern for me if ever they read his editorial. Shear is not for Architecture - he is for architects. They are subscribers. Architecture can wait. Certainly Architecture is no subscriber. We who love Architecture far and away above architects find pusillanimous if not vicious any doctrine that puts the act of getting work to do or getting work done, above the quality of the work done! That is Shear. As you know I think architects are all that is the matter with Architecture and so have never really joined their A. I. A. - although I've always done whatever else they asked of me. In love with Architecture, life-long, I have found architects mostly in the way; their professionalism, like that editors of their favorite magazines, just this side of thievery. They should know that many of my statements regarding the architects in question were made with a belly-laugh, not in print. But I enclose a copy of my statement apropos the American Legion and the Air-Force Academy invitation to appear before Congress and tell the truth. I did. So did the A. I. A. appear and either lied about the whole proceeding or there is no meaning in the A. I. A. pretense of ethics in Architectural practice, etc., etc. When I get back to New York next week, as soon as Hoffman returns, I will try to straighten out the little money matter that must rankle in your mind now.And we have decided to let the contractor's engineer get his own permit for building the Museum. I do not want to mess in that foolish affair anymore."
