Jef DIEDEREN (Heerlen 1920 - Amsterdam 2009)Painter, graphic artistEducation: Jef Diederen trained at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht. He continued his education at the Rijksacademie voor de Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. AmsterdamJef Diederen was one of the so-called 'Limburg Amsterdammers'. Diederen took part in the group exhibition Amsterdam painters van Nu in 1948 and had his first solo exhibition in 1957. Until 1955, he painted mostly landscape gouaches and drawings. Many works were based on the realistic landscapes of his native South Limburg. Later, Jef Diederen developed in a more abstract direction, but landscapes remained a great inspiration for him.Jef Diederen's art is lyrical-abstract with a friendly and soft look, but possesses strong colours. As an idiosyncratic artist, Diederen never sought firm affiliation with groups or movements. His oil paintings often had idiosyncratic dimensions, making them striking. Diederen also made combinations of canvases of various sizes. Besides his many paintings and works on paper, he also carried out several commissions for murals and stained-glass windows. Subjects such as terror and war violence, have always had a great influence on Jef Diederen's work. The Second World War and persecution of Jews, the war in Vietnam, the oppression of Palestinians and Indians, were therefore successively reflected in his work. In between, Diederen was also constantly inspired by nature, architecture, dance and music, resulting in many new colourful works.Comes from the collection of the municipality of The Hague, The Netherlands.
