Description
NATIONALE "EL CAPITAN" HIGH POWER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, WITH BROWNING SOFT CASE. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 74C06333. Bbl. 4 5/8". One of very few "El Capitan" High Power semi-automatic pistols mfg. by Fabrique Nationale to incorporate the Post-1973 "FABRIQUE NATIONALE HERSTAL" name change on the slide legend, with most "El Capitan" pistols being built with earlier pattern marked slides, which included Browning's importer information. This example, mfg. by Fabrique Nationale in 1974, is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE HERSTAL BELGIQUE/ BROWNING'S PATENT DEPOSE" on the left side of the slide. Right side of the forward trigger guard web and 2-piece bbl. exhibit a Belgian commercial proof. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bbl., which is polished in-the-white. Slotted frame is mounted with 2-piece varnished checkered wood grips, which feature red anti-moisture barrier paint on the interior of the panels. Slide features an external extractor, with a dovetailed blade front sight and tangent V-notch rear sight, graduated 50-500. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, slide, and bbl. MAGS: 1 phosphate 13-rd. with blued button type floorplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: non-matching Browning black leather soft case. CONDITION: fine, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting a few superficial handling marks, which are primarily present on the left side of the slide. Mirror bore, retaining a layer of grease, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips are very good to excellent overall. Soft case shows some light wear, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. An extremely rare example of a Fabrique Nationale Herstal marked "El Capitan" High Power pistol. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-423/MLW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
