Page 631 of Flayderman's 9th edition states that while estimated production of 15,000 military rifles of total production of 25,000 in all styles, a "Great majority made under contract for Central and South American Countries; small quantities sold to State Militias." Additionally, "An American martially marked specimen with markings on barrel VP over eagle .45 caliber-70 Gr. would be considered quite rare and command a substantial premium. Rarely encountered in any variation". Bbl. marked on top "45 CAL -70 GR." and on left "V / P" over eagle proof. Fixed front sight with 500 yard graduated leaf rear sight. Breechloading action, narrow breechblock is hinged on the right side and lifts upward to load. Blue finished bbl. with case colored action. 2-band walnut forearm and straight grip stock with steel musket buttplate. Equipped with a front stacking swivel and slotted tip wiping rod. CONDITION: bbl. blue has faded to a mottled brown. Action retains traces of case colors in protected areas with the balance having a mottled gray/brown appearance showing light marks. Wood shows heavy wear with scratches, marks, and dents, having chipping around the buttplate toe. Sound action. Lightly pitted bore retains intact rifling. (01-27183/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
