Canadian. 1863. Picture frames were some of the fanciest and most artistic forms made by early Canadian potteries. This lot includes three rare Brantford Pottery picture frames marked for three different members of the Effner family. There are two smaller frames and one large frame. One of the smaller ones is stamped twice, "Mrs Effner 1863", on rear. A second frame in the same size is marked, "Mr. W Effner." The third larger frame is stamped three times, "Mr. A Effner". Abraham Efner Senior was a coach maker and steam bender in London Canada West. He and Mrs Efner had two sons. In 1863-64, Abraham Efner Junior was 18 and William Efner was 23. While not marked by the pottery, this style of frame is solidly attributed to the Brantford Pottery. See Moe Johnson's "The Potters' Reach", page 543, Fig. 44-14 for a similar frame made and marked by John Beech, Brantford 1863. See also pages 541 and 542 for another similar marked by John Marx maker and stamped both Paris and Brantford. It is rare to find one marked frame. A set of three from the same family is truly outstanding.
