Description
A charming and early blue and white transferware teacup with saucer from Copeland & Garrett, later Spode, dating from around the mid-19th century. The decoration is the rare “Burns Pattern,” produced for Livingstone’s China in Oban, Scotland, which makes this example particularly interesting from both a historical and collecting perspective. The exterior of the cup is richly decorated with stylised dog or lion figures and geometric motifs, while the interior features a printed tribute to Robert Burns with the line “We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet for days o’ auld lang syne” from the famous Scottish poem Auld Lang Syne. The saucer carries the same blue transfer print with mythological-inspired animals and a decorative border. Dimensions: cup 8 cm in diameter and 6 cm high, saucer 11 cm in diameter, combined weight 221 grams. Produced using classic cobalt blue underglaze transfer printing. Marked beneath “Burns Pattern Manufactured for Livingstone’s China Oban by W.T. Copeland & Garrett late Spode,” confirming both provenance and age. The condition is good with minor age-related wear, light glaze crazing and normal signs of use. Comparable examples of this rare Burns-themed design seldom appear on the market and are highly valued among collectors of British ceramics and literary memorabilia.
