Janet Folsom was a well-known Palm Beach artist who studied under Alexander Laccoleff at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as well as at the Cleveland School of Art. Folsom gained recognition for her innovative shaped canvas which unite the realms of painting and sculpture. These geometric abstract reliefs were created through the mix of fabric, paint, wood and other materials. Folsom's hybrid works are similar in nature to those of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly, who used shape, scale and color to redefine traditional painting practices. Her works can be found in the collections of Boston University, Dartmouth University, the Miami Museum of Modern Art and the Addison Gallery of American Art on the campus of Phillips Andover Academy.
