
A rare Edwardian group of eight silver novelty characters from 'Handley Cross: or Mr Jorrock's Hunt' Marr & Sons, London 1904 and 1905 Each modelled in a caricaturist manner, comprising: Mr Jorrock mounted with hand to ear, Mr Jorrocks mounted with horse walking, Mr Jorrock standing pointing with hand in pocket, Mr Jorrock with hat raised by hunting whip, Mr Jorrock holding fox with coat being pulled by a dog, Mr Jorrock standing with hands behind his coat tails, a figure with hand through his top hat and a figure holding a fox aloft with ripped coat, each raised on ebonised plinths, height tallest 16.6cm. (8) Footnotes: The figures are taken from Robert Smith Surtees' (1805-1864), 1838 to 1839 work 'Handley Cross or Mr Jorrock's Hunt', illustrated by John Leech (1817-1864), it is from these illustrations that the present figures are taken. The work is humorous and satirical work which follows the exploits of Mr. Jorrock's, a former city grocer turned enthusiastic fox hunter, in the fictional Surrey Town of Handley Cross. The present lot mainly depicts the titular Mr John Jorrock's from different parts of the narrative.
