A small lodestone, English, late 17th century, the section of magnetite with brass mounts and suspension loop, iron poles, in later tin box with lid inset with a card written in manuscript .....sunk at Spithead 1711. This 1lb weight recovered from the wreck in 1844 now weighs but little more than 1/2 lb, the loadstone 3 x 3 1.5cm (1 1/8 x 1 1/8 x 1/2in) Footnotes: HMS Edgar was destroyed by an accidental explosion while at Spithead, Hampshire on 15 October while all her commissioned officers were ashore, with heavy loss of life.
