
A William & Mary silver lidded tankard Isaac Dighton, London 1697 Slightly tapering cylindrical form with applied moulded rim and moulded skirted foot, the front with armorial, the blazon a chevron ermone between three lion rampant, also crest above a full lion rampant, the hinged flat cover with slightly curved stepped platform, with scroll thumb piece, the scroll handle terminating with a vacant cartouche, height 19.5cm, weight 36.2oz. Footnotes: One possible arrangement of the charges in the arms, for Sir Hugh OWEN (1645-1698) 2nd Baronet of Orielton, Pembrokeshire an MP in the English parliament, who married Anne OWEN heiress of Bodean and as a result unified the estates of the OWEN family. He had a son Sir Arthur OWEN (1674-1753) 3rd Baronet also an MP. later indexes, with only demi lion rampant crest, suggest the BOWRING family who were at the time of assay of Chulmleigh, Devon and later of Claremont Villa Exeter. Another three possibilities but lack the identified crest, are for The ORWELL family of the Isle of Ely; The WOLMINGTON family of Dorset; The LANGTON family of St John Langton and Ferneley, Yorkshire.
