
A Victorian silver-mounted claret jug John Mortimer & John Samuel Hunt, London 1843 Baluster form, the hinged cover with crown finial, the border with fruiting vines, with naturalistic vine scroll handle, terminating into openwork fruiting vine decoration to the frosted glass body, with CREST, amongst the foliage, with engraved armorial of BOLCKOW to the glass body, on a knopped stem with further fruit vine surround, to a spreading foot with continued fruiting vines to the base, height 35.5cm. Footnotes: The armorial is for Henry William Ferdinand BOLCKOW Esq (1806-1878) he was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, before moving to the north of England. He was an early iron founder. He co-founded the company Bolckow, Vaughan and the companies success saw Middlesbrough flourish and huge population growth. He was elected their first Mayor and then later stood unopposed as the first MP for Middlesborough in 1868. His contributions locally are identified as leading to the development of Middlesborough, with a statue erected in the centre of Middlesbrough. He was a noted art collector of predominantly French and British pictures.
