
A Battersea enamel bottle ticket / label for MADEIRA circa 1753 - 1756 Engraved by Simon Francis Ravenet after a design by James Gwim, printed in red and lightly overpainted in colours with a putto leaning on a barrel painted with the title 'MADEIRA', pointing at a distant sailing ship, length 7cm; together with a replica enamelled label, by Wyard Druitt, for Halcyon Days; together with a Staffordshire enamel bottle ticket, a French enamel bottle ticket 'MALVOISIE DE MADERE' and four other labels. Madeira was considered to be improved by a long sea voyage, hence the distant ship forming part of the design Battersea enamels were produced at York House, under the partnership of Janssen, Delamain and Brooks between 1753 and 1755 or 1756 when the factory closed. Listed for sale at Janssen's bankruptcy sale in 1756 were 'Bottle tickets with Chains for all sorts of Liquor, and of different subjects'. Simon Francis Ravenet was the principal engraver at York House.
