
An early 18th century pressed horn silver-mounted snuff box maker mark only I.S Oval, the pressed horn lid depicting an equine portrait of Peter The Great of Russia, with ribbed moulding to cover, and foot of rim of base, length 11.3cm. Footnotes: A near identical 18th century oval pressed horn box with an equestrian portrait of Peter the Great can be found in the Worshipful Company of Horners collection held at Museum of Design in Plastics, object number WCHL:20. This box is signed 'SL' (Samuel Lambelet) who was a medallist to the court of Brunswick-Luneburg between 1698-1727. There are other examples of this scene attributable to John Obrisset, a specialist carver and medallist. He worked in silver, horn and tortoiseshell specialising in Snuff Boxes with portraits in relief.
