A substantial and finely executed mid-Victorian oil on canvas portrait of a seated lady, painted by the British artist W.R. Waters and signed and dated 1877 lower left.
The sitter is depicted in formal black dress with lace bonnet and jewellery, her pose composed yet engaging.
She is seated beside a table with a stack of books, lending the work a refined and intellectual character.
