A late 19th-century portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas, by George Frederick Harris (1855–1936), signed lower left.
The sitter is shown half-length, formally dressed, with a dark jacket, patterned cravat, and pin, against a dark green-brown ground.
The canvas is stamped to the reverse Harris & Sons, Portrait Painters, Merthyr Tydfil and Prepared by Winsor & Newton, 38 Rathbone Place, London – a canvas supplier active at that address until the 1890s.
The stretcher also bears a chalk inscription: G.
F. Harris 1881?, likely a reference to the artist and approximate date of the work.
George Frederick Harris was a portrait and landscape painter active in South Wales, where he ran a portrait studio in Merthyr Tydfil.
His work is recorded in Welsh regional art circles and is of growing historical interest.
He was also the grandfather of the actor Rex Harrison.
Set in a later giltwood frame, ready to hang.
