Title: Small Inlaid Hardwood Box – Possibly Anglo-Indian, 19th or Early 20th Century
Description: Small Inlaid Hardwood Box – Possibly Anglo-Indian, 19th or Early 20th Century
A small rectangular hardwood box, likely rosewood or a similar richly grained timber, measuring approximately 10 x 10 x 6.5 cm.
The hinged lid is decorated with a naïve inlay of a figure in traditional dress, possibly of bone, ivory or a similar pale material, suggestive of Anglo-Indian or Southeast Asian origin.
The sides are plain, with exposed nail joinery and simple brass hinges and clasp.
The interior is unlined.
The box shows surface wear, minor scuffs, and a natural patina consistent with age and use.
A few small losses to the inlay and some wear to the brass fittings.
Catch to clasp not present
A characterful and possibly handmade item with folk-art appeal, likely produced for export during the late 19th or early 20th century.
