The thick glaze protects the hands of the tea-drinker and the small size encourages more cherished sips, allowing more time to appreciate the meditative practice of tea drinking. This form was favoured by Buddhist monks as it embodied Zen values and the ware was brought to Japan as tenmoku, the Japanese reading of Tianmu, a mountain in Hangzhou, China, where this type of bowl was first used for tea drinking.
