
A CANTON ENAMEL EWER AND COVER AND TWO CANTON ENAMEL CUPS AND A SAUCER Qianlong Comprising: a ewer rising from a short spreading foot to a long waisted neck joined to a large loop handle and s-shaped spout, the pear-shaped body decorated with brightly coloured floral motifs and scrolling vines on a yellow ground, a drop-shaped panel on either side of the body depicting Shoulao under a pine tree, the domed cover with a bud-shaped finial; a teacup painted with a mountain village landscape and another with a border of flowers and vines entwined towards a band of lotus petals below, both with s-shaped handles and a blue floral motif on the interior; together with a saucer with lobed rim and foliate border depicting a European couple courting under a tree surrounded by mountains and rockwork, a pink chrysanthemum painted on the reverse. The ewer 26.5cm (10.4 in) high, the dish 11.3cm (4.45 in) diam. (5). It was particularly popular among upper-class Europeans because of its colourful designs and foreign yet familiar figural scenes, but it was also sold to the Islamic market, as the ewer in this present lot is designed to have been.
