An interesting collection of early Bow porcelain, circa 1748-52 Applied with prunus sprigs and left in the white, comprising a twin-handled chocolate beaker with a gently flared rim, 6.6cm high, incised R mark, a coffee can with a gently spreading foot, 5.9cm high, incised line, a teabowl and saucer with petal-lobed rims, saucer 13.1cm wide, incised line inside footrim of both, another teabowl and saucer of plain shape and thinly potted, applied with three naturalistic floral sprigs, saucer 12.5cm diam (6) Footnotes: Provenance Anton Gabszewicz Collection Literature Michael Signy, 'A matter of attribution' ECC Trans, Vol.30 (2019), p.206, fig.5 (floral sprigs teabowl and saucer, last-mentioned) In this interesting group, all but the last-mentioned teabowl and saucer are marked with an incised R or incised line. Although there is great variety in the thickness of the potting and glaze of each piece, they are all early, the earliest piece probably the twin-handled beaker, which is particularly thinly potted, the glaze tight-fitting and silky. See the teapot and sugar bowl of this class also from the Gabszewicz Collection, sold by Bonhams on 19 November 2025, lot 134. The last-mentioned teabowl and saucer is applied with European style flower sprigs, rather than prunus. Michael Signy illustrates and discusses this example in the above-mentioned paper, where he suggests that a previous attribution of this type to Vauxhall seems unlikely, as a small number of similarly sprigged pieces are known with incised R marks. A coffee cup and saucer of this type is illustrated by Massey, Marno and Spero, Ceramics of Vauxhall p.68, no.97, where the colour under UV light is noted as atypical for Vauxhall. The same cup and saucer was sold as part of the Garrick Bond Collection by Bonhams on 17 May 2017, lot 184, as Vauxhall. The subsequent discovery of a very faint incised R mark to the underside of the cup, visible under strong light would indeed suggest that the origin of this rare group is Bow.
