An interesting Liverpool coffee cup, attributed to Samuel Gilbody, circa 1758-60 Of gently flared U-shape with a very shallow footrim, delicately painted in blue a landscape with tall rocks and trees, the finely grooved handle with a leaf motif diminishing in size, 5.8cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Roderick Jellicoe Lyn and Maurice Hillis Collection Literature Maurice Hillis, Liverpool Porcelain (2011), p.290, fig.7.28 This intriguing cup is discussed by Hillis, where he points out the paste and silky glaze as in-keeping with the Gilbody attribution but that the shape of the cup is atypical, as is the finely grooved handle. The painting is done with extreme care and attention given to the different washes of blue to shade in the detail. Although Hillis attributes the present lot to Gilbody, he does suggest that William Reid is a possible origin.
