
A rare Chelsea figure of a Turk, circa 1753-55 Modelled standing in a dancing pose, his left arm outstretched and his right grasping the edge of his long white ermine-trimmed coat, wearing a tall brown hat, pink tunic and floral patterned trousers, the low mound base applied with leaves and flowers, 16.5cm high, red anchor mark Footnotes: Provenance With A J Filkins, March 1971 A similar figure of a Turk is illustrated by F Severne Mackenna, Chelsea Porcelain: The Red Anchor Wares (1951), p.50, fig.100 and another is in the Museum of Fine Art, Boston (inv. no.30.286). It is likely that the hat worn by the figure is a sikke, a tall camel's hair hat worn by dervishes who are known for their whirling dances.
