
A very rare pair of Chelsea figures a Prince and Queen, circa 1755 After the Meissen originals, he standing wearing a turban and long pale yellow robe sprigged with flowers, a quiver of arrows and a bow strapped to his back, his left hand raised and his right on his hip, she wearing a feathered headdress, floral robes and a pale yellow cape lined in pink, upon low mound bases applied with flowers and leaves, 19.5cm and 20cm high, red anchor marks (2) Footnotes: Provenance With James A Lewis and Son, New York Also sometimes known as the Abyssinian Archer and companion, these figures correspond to 'Two very fine black figures of an Indian prince and a queen' in the 1755 and 1765 Chelsea sale catalogues. The Chelsea versions are after the Meissen originals modelled by P Reinicke, although the prince is a mirror image of the prototype which sets the pair apart from copies of these figures by other English factories. A similar pair of figures is illustrated by F Severne Mackenna, Chelsea Porcelain: The Red Anchor Wares (1951), pl.51, fig.101 and another is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. nos.1973.649 and 1973.650).
