Oval, 150mm (5 7/8in) high Provenance: Christie's London, 24 February, 1997, lot 265; The Twinight Collection Footnotes: Louis-Philippe spent much of his youth in exile, finally settling in England in 1800. In November, 1809, he married Maria Amalia Teresa, a Princess of the Two Sicilies. The couple, who doted on each other, would go on to have ten children. With the fall of Napoleon and the Bourbon Restoration of 1814, Louis Philippe returned to France where he stood in opposition to the repressive, conservative regimes of Louis XVIII and Charles X, earning himself wide-spread support. In July 1830, an uprising toppled Charles X and the Chamber of Deputies proclaimed Louis Philippe as King. In a break with the past, he was to be styled 'King of the French,' rather than 'King of France,' thus linking his power to a people rather than to a state. During the early part of his reign, Louis Philippe, the so-called 'Citizen King' was popular with his subjects but was later criticised for his increasingly conservative policies and his failure to improve the condition of the working classes. In 1848, during a year of revolution across Europe, Louis Philippe abdicated and returned with his family to exile in England, where he was welcomed by the young Queen Victoria, with whom he had always enjoyed excellent relations.
