Description
Faith Ringgold was the first highly collected Black woman artist. Her retrospective opened at the De Young Museum, and continued to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ringgold addresses social justice, history, and hope for a better way forward in her works. She refuses to shy away from historical truths.Ringgold spoke truth to the artworld at all levels. She insisted upon respect from curators and gallerists, and she gave advice freely to younger Black artists who became discouraged. The radical honesty in the text she included in this artwork helps us see into the lived experience of Black people in America. I learn from this work, and I consider things I haven't previously known about. -Tonya Turner Carroll, collector
