Dorr Bothwell (1902-2000) The Ghost Dance (A Four-Panel Folding Screen) unsigned casein and graphite on paper-backed silk each 67 x 24 3/4 in.; overall 71 x 107 1/2 in. Painted circa 1935. Footnotes: Provenance Private collection, Texas. We wish to thank The Dorr Bothwell Trust for their kind assistance with cataloging the lot. The present work depicting a Ghost Dance ceremony by tribal members of the Great Plains is one of three extant screens that Dorr Bothwell painted in 1936 for her short-lived Bothwell-Cooke Gallery in Los Angeles. It is thought to be an early screen design due to its ambitious composition and delicate support.
