
OF WORLD WAR I BRITISH ARMY INTEREST: An interesting collection of items belonging to Lance Corporal (CPL.) R. Pope of the Royal Field Artillery (marked R.A.) Comprising a set of three service medals, the bar including space for a military medal (now lacking), together with two rare 'trench art' carved and stained wood comical jigger dolls or puppets, traditionally thought to depict Kaiser Wilhelm II and Emperor Franz Joseph, both depicted wearing peaked caps with horsehair moustaches and matted glued horsehair hair, their narrow legs both with exaggerated boots, the larger puppet with lead and brass rivet inset eyes, the smaller puppet with inset glass eyes, both with holes to their backs to articulate them with sticks, an artillery horsewhip with plaited leather and string end and canted wood handle stamped 179 HB RGA D1 and with Broad Arrow or Crows Foot government mark, a turned and carved wood trench truncheon with ring turned handle, inset iron rivets and lead core, and a later painted wooden and iron strap bound gun carriage wheel, the larger puppet, 49cm high, the smaller puppet, 39cm high, the whip, 100cm long overall, the truncheon, 42cm long, the wheel, 60cm diameter overall (6) Footnotes: Richard Pope, R.F.A, Capt.
