
Attributed to Thomas Cooley (British, 1795-1872) Portrait of Louise Maria Dix, born 1831 bears inscription (in a period hand, on label attached to the reserve) oil on canvas 30.2 x 25.4cm (11 7/8 x 10in). Footnotes: Thomas Cooley (1795-1872) was a portrait painter, born in Dublin. He was the grandson of the well known Irish architect of the same name. Despite being born deaf and mute, Cooley showed precocious artistic talent. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London in 1813, when he was aged 18 and in 1814 he exhibited twenty portraits at the Hibernian Society in Dublin. He showed a total of fifty-two works at the RA and sixty at the RHA. There are 4 pencil portraits by Cooley of J.M.W. Turner, Henry Fuseli, Sir John Soane and John Flaxman in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London (all were drawn in 1810).
