
OF DUKE OF WELLINGTON INTEREST: A rare 19th century carved rhea egg inscribed with the biography of the Duke of Wellington The blown and turned egg, with ribbon suspension, with inscription reading Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, Marquess of Douro, Field Marshal, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and the Rifle Brigade, Constable of the Tower of London, Warden of the Cinque Ports, Elder Brother of the Trinity House, and Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and the Tower Hamlets; Chancellor of the University of Oxford; Field Marshal of Austria, Russia, Prussia, and France; Prince of Waterloo and Field Marshal in the Netherlands; Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo, Grandee of the Highest Class, and Captain General in Spain; Duke of Vitória and Marshal General in Portugal. Born at Dangan Castle, Westmeath, on 1st May 1769. Entered the Army almost a bpy, he obtained his commission as Ensign and Lieutenant in the year 1787, a Captain in 1791, Lieutenant Colonel in 1802, Lieutenant General in 1806, and General in Spain and Portugal 1811: and Field Marshal on 21st June 1813. Fought the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815, which the final overthrow of the Emperor Napoleon. His Grace died at Walmer Castle on Tuesday September 14th 1852.
