After the Antique: An Italian patinated bronze bust of Pseudo-Seneca Probably late 18th/early 19th century Modelled full face, with flowing hair, his head turned slightly to dexter, mounted on Sienna marble square plinth base, 16cm high Footnotes: After the model found in the Villa Papyri, Herculaneum, Italy in 1754. Originally believed to depict Seneca the Younger, but modern scholars believe this to be a fictitious portrait, probably intended as either Hesiod or Aristophanes. The bust is conserved in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. Provenance: Acquired from Charles van der Heyden, Rotterdam, 1977.
