Born in St Helier, Jersey, to a family that had fled Normandy following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, he was initially trained as a carver and frame-maker. He worked with his uncle, Matthew Gosset, a sculptor and wax modeller, and later collaborated with his brother Jacob in supplying giltwood frames to leading artists such as William Hogarth, Jacopo Amigoni and Allan Ramsay. Gosset was particularly noted for his ability to model wax portrait medallions rapidly and directly from sittings, a practice that distinguished him from many contemporaries who relied on existing images. His portraits were widely praised for their accuracy of likeness and were subsequently reproduced through casts supplied to manufacturers including Wedgwood and James Tassie.
