
A matched set of eight very similar late 17th century oak side chairs Derbyshire and/or Yorkshire, 1670-1700 Each with a typical double arcaded back, on turned supports, some variations in the proportions, the largest chair: 45cm wide x 41.5cm deep x 103cm high, (17 1/2in wide x 16in deep x 40 1/2in high) seat height: 46cm. (8) Footnotes: Provenance Until fairly recently the offered chairs formed part of a collection of furniture and works of art, ranging from the 15th century to the 18th century, which furnished an early 15th century Sussex manor house. This collection was amassed predominantly over the course of the last quarter of the previous century; it included a number of rare and, in a few instances, very early pieces, most of which sold last year, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 23 September 2025, Vernacular Furniture, Naive Art and Textiles. A comparable chair (one of a pair), which is dated 1665-1670, is illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, 1987, Oxford, fig. 6, p. 23. It is described therein as being of Yorkshire origin, however thee are also closely related examples of this type which can be found defined as having been made in Derbyshire so often it can be difficult to tell them apart.
