
An oak George VI Coronation chair together with its matching stool 1937, The chair by W. Hands & Sons Ltd., the stool by Waring & Gillow Ltd. The chair with chamfered square section front legs and plain square section rear legs, the stool with four chamfered square section legs, both with beech rails, the chair stamped: 'W. HANDS & SONS, LTD.', '1937' and branded: 'GRVI', the stool stamped: 'WARING & GILLOW (1932) LTD.' and branded: 'GRVI CORONATION', the stool: 46cm wide x 31cm deep x 48.5cm high; the chair: 49cm wide x 42cm deep x 85.5cm high, (19in wide x 16 1/2in deep x 33 1/2in high) (2) Footnotes: The offered chair and stool were made for Dr Leslie Burgin and his wife, Mrs Burgin, both of whom attended the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, 12 May 1937, at Westminster Abbey. They would have used this furniture, as was the case with the vast majority of attendees, whilst they bore witness to this momentous occasion in British history. Dr Burgin (1887-1945), who had been elected as the Liberal MP for Luton in 1929, was later appointed to the cabinet as Minister of Transport by the then Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in 1937. Burgin subsequently also served in the Right Honourable Sir Winston Churchill's government, having been made Minister of Supply in 1939, shortly before the beginning of World War II. Thereafter the present lot has passed by descent within the family. Upon request to the department, a copy of the original Coronation invitation to Dr and Mrs Leslie Burgin is also available with this lot.
