It was he who, by 1800, began to circulate the story that while the ship had been trapped in the ice, Nelson had seen and pursued a polar bear, before being ordered to return to the ship. By 1801 Nelson was again serving under Admiral Lutwidge, now as captain of HMS Medusa. The present address panel may originate from a letter Nelson sent to Ludwidge on 22 August 1801, requesting him to add a letter to the packet Lutwidge is making up for Nepean (see Swann Galleries, 16 June 2022, lot 118). Lutwidge died at his estates at Holmrook in Cumbria in 1814. Admiral Lutwidge's great-niece was Francis Jane Lutwidge, the mother of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and the family were visitors to Holmrook. Dodgson's cousin C.R. Fletcher Ludwidge never married, so his estate was inherited by his cousin Ernest Frederick Lowthorpe, who added the surname Lutwidge under the terms of the will. Provenance: By family descent to the present owner.
