Title: Old Eskimo Carved Wood Dance Mask - Alaska Description: The old Eskimo mask is most likely from King Island, although it could also originate from the Yukon Delta. The mask was never painted. Several small holes around the perimeter suggest the former attachment of feathers or possibly a hoop structure. During dances and ceremonies, shamans would perform with masks representing his or her tutelaries (guardian animal spirits). When the bond between the shaman and the tutelary was strong and close, the spirit would occasionally allow the shaman to show its face, or essence. Thus, some masks have hinges that when opened reveal a face within an animal and other masks lack the hinges and just show the face. DIm: 30 x 20 x 11 cm, 589 gram. Stand not included.
