John Jay Militia Appointment Signed. One partially printed page, 15 3/4 x 10 inches, New York; September 1, 1798. Jay appoints "Abraham Salisbury Esquire…First Major of the Regiment of Militia in the County of Ulster whereof George Hale Esquire is Lieutenant Colonel Commandant…" Signed "John Jay" as Governor of New York and countersigned by Daniel Hale as Secretary of State. Below, Abraham B. Bancker signs as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, attesting that Salisbury appeared before the court and took the Oath of Allegiance in support of the Constitution of the United States. With embossed paper seal at the top left. Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Long separations at the top and bottom of the centermost fold, touching text but not affecting legibility.
