John Singleton Mosby Signed Envelope Addressed in His Hand. 6 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches (sight), postmarked Bedford City, Virginia; September 11, 1913. Matted and framed alongside a printed photograph of Mosby and an engraved plaque to an overall size of 22 1/2 x 19 inches. The envelope, engrossed in Mosby's hand, is addressed to "Mrs. Lena Noland Haxall / Middleburg / London Co – Va." Mosby signs at the top left, "Jno. S. Mosby." Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from PSA. After joining the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the war, Mosby quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant and served under General J.E.B. Stuart as a scout and intelligence officer. In 1863, Mosby was authorized by Stuart to form and lead an independent cavalry unit, known as Mosby's Rangers (43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry). The unit specialized in guerrilla warfare, conducting raids, ambushes, and hit-and-run attacks on Union supply lines and communications. His operations were highly effective in disrupting Union activities in Northern Virginia, earning him the nickname "Gray Ghost." Condition: Not examined outside of frame.
