1971 Norton Commando 920cc 'Norvil' Production Racer Replica Registration no. BAA 28J Frame no. 137822 Engine no. 850 33526 Alongside the stock Commando roadster, Norton Villiers offered a competition version under the 'Norvil' name intended for production class racing. Introduced for 1971, the Commando Production Racer was developed by works rider/engineer Peter Williams and produced in very limited numbers for little more than one season, with a list price double that of other Commandos. The first Commando to be fitted with a disc front brake as standard, the Production Racer came with a tuned engine, clip-on handlebars, rear-set footrests and a distinctive yellow glassfibre fuel tank and bodywork. Genuine examples of this limited-edition rarity are highly sought after by collectors and only very infrequently are they offered for sale; understandably, replicas are popular. The rebirth of Norton has garnered much attention in recent years; meanwhile, at its factory in Burntwood, Staffordshire, marque specialists the Norvil Motorcycle Company are still catering for the original Norton Commando in its various guises. They use new tooling to revised drawings, and manufacture in newer and better materials to modern day tolerances for greatly improved reliability. Based on a 1971 750, this replica Production Racer was built between 2004 and 2017 by the previous owner, who carried out a 'last-nut-and-bolt' restoration, including acquiring a later (circa 1974) 850cc engine and fitting a 920cc 'big bore' conversion. Other works included a top-end overhaul by a local motorcycle mechanic; cylinder head fin repair by SRM; and fitting split-shaft collars to the swinging arm to cure excess movement. Notable features include Norvil twin front disc brakes; Grimeca brake calipers; Maguro master cylinder: Akront wheel rims; stainless steel spokes; belt primary drive conversion; and twin 34mm Mikuni carburettors. Acquired by our private vendor three years ago, the Commando was last MoT'd in 2018 but has not seen much use. Since acquisition the vendor has carried out a few fettling jobs but has hardly used the bike; he advises us that it starts OK (with a strong right leg) and that the gear change pattern is reversed. The machine was last ridden in September 2023 and was last started in January 2026. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding. A small selection of spares, including two Amal Concentric Mk2 carburettors, comes with the machine. Accompanying paperwork includes the following: •Current V5C Registration Certificate •MoT certificate (expired 2019) •D C Rogers correspondence •Quantity of The Norvil Motorcycle Co Ltd invoices •Various other bills/invoices Offered with key Footnotes: BUYER'S PREMIUM The Buyer's Premium for this Lot is 15%+VAT on the first £500k of the Hammer Price, and 12%+VAT on the balance thereafter.
