1952 Peugeot 125cc 55TC Registration no. not registered Frame no. 919827 (to attached plaque) Engine no. 13 CRT 6 One of the pioneering firms of the French motorcycle industry, Peugeot followed the familiar progression, first adding proprietary clip-on engines to its bicycles before building complete machines of its own manufacture. In the years immediately before and after WWI the works Peugeots were a dominant force in racing, thanks to a succession of innovative overhead-camshaft designs by Jean Antoinescu. A wide range of models was manufactured between the wars but after WW2 the firm concentrated mainly on the manufacture of two-stroke lightweights, mopeds and, following the Italian lead, scooters. Based on the pre-war 100cc P53, the first of the Type 55 family of 125cc two-stroke lightweights appeared in 1946 powered by a unitary construction air-cooled engine. In its first incarnation the Type 55 featured rigid frame, girder front fork, and a three-speed hand-change gearbox. The Type 55 would turn out to be an immense success, spawning a plethora of variants in the course of a ten-year production life. Developments along the way included plunger-type rear suspension, a telescopic front fork, and a foot-change gearbox. The history of this Type 55TC is not known and the machine is offered without documents. Stored for some considerable time, it will need recommissioning/restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over).
