2004 Yamaha YZ450F Moto-Crosser Registration no. not registered Frame no. CJ05C-001074 Engine no. J318E-000768 Yamaha were at the forefront of design technology when the world of moto-cross began the gradual switch from two-strokes to four-strokes some 30 years ago. Two-strokes had dominated the sport since the mid-1960s, just as they had in road racing, but the pressing need to adopt the more 'environmentally friendly' four-strokes could no longer be ignored. Four-strokes could not compete with two-strokes of equal capacity, but then in 1996, the American Motorcyclist Association permitted four-strokes of any displacement to compete in the same racing class as 250cc two-strokes. The Yamaha YZ400F was developed to take advantage of this concession, featuring water-cooling and Yamaha's innovative five-valve cylinder head (as used on its sports roadsters). The prototype YZ400M first raced in 1997, with the production YZ400F becoming available the following year. In 1998, Doug Henry won the AMA National Motocross Championship aboard the YZ400F, becoming the first rider to win on a four-stroke motorcycle in the modern era. The model was updated as the YZ426F in 2000 before its arrival in 2003 as the definitive YZ450F. Continuously developed, the latter is still in production in '8th Generation' form today. This YZ450F was purchased by the private vendor a few years ago. No previous history is known. Dry stored since acquisition and started recently, it is offered without documents.
