RAÚL MARTÍNEZ (1927-1995) La Conquista (from the series ¡Oh America! #4) signed, inscribed and dated 'Raul Martinez - Habana - 1992 de la serie la conquista ¡OH, AMERICA! #4' (on the reverse) acrylic, ink, pastel, acetate and collage on card 39 1/4 x 27 3/8 in (99.7 x 69.3 cm) Executed in 1992 Footnotes: This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Archivo Raúl Martínez and signed by Corina Matamoros. Provenance Abelardo Estorino Collection, Havana. Acquired from the above by the present owner. La Conquista (1992) belongs to one of Raúl Martínez's most complex and critical series, in which the artist addresses history, identity, and visual culture through a fragmented and contemporary perspective. Human figures, photographic references, and decorative elements are integrated into a layered composition that evokes both personal memory and processes of cultural and symbolic conquest. Through painterly collage, image superimposition, and strong chromatic contrasts, Martínez reinterprets the visual language of Pop Art through a Latin American sensibility. Rather than celebrating mass imagery, the work interrogates power, desire, and representation, positioning the body and the image as sites of cultural negotiation. A pioneer of Pop Art in Latin America, Martínez is regarded as a central figure in twentieth-century Cuban art, celebrated for merging social critique, historical consciousness, and contemporary iconography into an innovative visual language.
