'PANKO' - ORIGINAL DRAWING Original drawing by E.T. Reed, for the suffragette card game 'Panko', depicting Lloyd George with a scroll labelled 'Budget', with the title 'Turn 'Em Out' upper left and erased lower left, pencil, signed with monogram 'ETR' (lower right), 248 x 154mm., [c.1909]; sold with a similar playing card (2) Footnotes: 'TURN 'EM OUT': An illustration for the 'Anti-Suffrage' suit of the well-known card game depicting the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lloyd George. The card game 'Panko', costing two shillings, was widely distributed by the Women's Social and Political Union. The manufacturer's advertisement noted the fine, true-to-life illustrations which '...form a portrait gallery of the leading figures of the movement. Not only is each picture in itself an interesting memento, but the game produces intense excitement without the slightest taint of bitterness. Are your friends interested in the cause? If so there is no better way to please them than to buy a pack of 'PANKO'' (Votes for Women, 3 December 1909). The illustrator Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933) is primarily known for his political caricatures for Punch magazine, his ubiquitous style clearly seen here in his designs for 'Panko'.
