Condon was passionate about bringing boxing directly to the people, staging events across New York City. At this particular event, he had not secured the necessary permits. As the crowd grew and anticipation buzzed in the air, police arrived, ready to shut things down. Just when it seemed the event might be halted, a limousine rolled up-and out stepped Mayor Lindsay, who had earlier promised to serve as a guest referee.
