John Whyte was a pattern designer who advocated for increased recognition of, and professionalism of the craft. As a member of the Scottish Society for the Arts, he submitted several articles including 'Outline of a plan for securing to the Manufactures of Scotland protection against piracy of patterns', and 'Descriptions and Drawings of his New Method of Manufacturing Persian Rugs'.
