
Buddhist narrative scroll A large painted scroll depicting multiple scenes from the legend of the Buddhist monk Phra Malai, and his journey to the underworld, coloured paint, on cotton, some abrasions and wear, a few short marginal tears, approximately 275 x 7600mm., Thailand (?or Laos), late 19th/early 20th Century Footnotes: A very long hand-painted cotton scroll depicting scenes from the life of a Buddhist monk who travelled to the underworld, where he beheld sinners boiled in a flaming cauldron, or chopped to pieces by fiery devils, with others kneeling in wait for their fate.
